List of books that hugely impacted Mahatma Gandhi.

I often wonder what makes a normal human to turn out to be a Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Abdul Kalam and so on. Definitely, they have a major impact of the people/circumstances they have come across in their lives and along with this, the other major fuel I strongly believe are the books they read. All of these great humans have several sets of favorite books which they kept on re-reading whenever they felt low. In Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography, there are several books which he mentioned have hugely impacted him. This article I am listing few of his favorite books.

·         The Gospels In Brief, What To Do?
      – Tolstoy

·         Dharma Vichar
     – Narmada Shanker

·         The Perfect Way
-- Anna Kingsford & Edward Maitland

·         The Kingdom Of God Is Within You.
      – Tolstoy

·         Unto This Last
      – Ruskin

·         Bhagavadgita
-- Gandhi had read almost all translations of it
         and his personal favorite
         is by Sir Edward Arnold.

·         The Light Of Asia
     -- Sir Edward Arnold

·         Key To Theosophy
     -- Madame Blavatsky

·         Ramayana
     – Tulasidas

·         Harishchandra Nataka
-- This play he considers has captured his heart

·         Shravana Pitrubhakti Nataka
-- Another play that impacted him deeply.

Non-religious books:

·         Plea For Vegetarianism
     -- Salt

·         The Ethics Of Diet
     --Howard Williams

·         The Perfect Way In Diet

List of Indian travelers you should know about.

You call them explorers, travelers, nomads, wanderers or with any other name but, for many, these people are a true inspiration and they are perfect examples of determination, strong will power and dedication. It is truly impossible to put what these people have experienced, how they have seen the world and their experiences in a single article but my main aim is to prepare a list of great travelers of India whom we should know about. When we study about other country explorers in our history lessons we should definitely learn about these people too.

The list of people I have mentioned here is little and I am continuously trying to gather more such inspiring people and I request the readers to add names of any other great explorers/ travelers in the comments section below so that I can include them into this article.

Bimol Mukerji:

I am ashamed of not knowing about this legend till date. I was surprised and stunned by what he has achieved. In the year 1926, Bimol Mukerji along with his 3 other friends started on a journey to travel the world on bicycles. Yeah, you heard it right on a bicycle. During the course of their journey, his friends have given up and returned back to India but this man continued alone and completed his epic journey and return back to India after 11 years in the year 1937. It is a difficult feat to travel around the world even in present days even though we have google, mobiles, the internet, many travelogues and roadside assistances. Without any of these things, this man has travelled 30+ countries. He is the first Indian Globe-Trotter. Before going on this epic journey he had travelled entire India from 1921 – 1926. Another great thing he did was writing a book about his entire world tour named “Du Chakay Duniya” which means The World on Two Wheels.

Nain Singh Rawat:

This man’s life is nothing less than a movie. His first exploration trip was with Germans between 1855 – 1857, he travelled to Manasarovar, Rakas Tal and then to Gartok and Ladakh. In 1865-66, he travelled 1200 miles (1931 km's) from Kathmandu to Lhasa and to Lake Manasarovar and back to India. He along with other explorers has undergone training to record distances by using different methods one of them was by using a modified Buddhist rosary or mala. Every 100 steps the explorers take, they will slip one bead from mala, so the complete length of rosary represents 10,000 steps. He did many explorations undercover as a monk and used to code the notes of measurements in the form of written prayers. Mercury, used for creating an artificial horizon, was kept in cowrie shells and, for use, poured into the begging bowl carried by explorers. This is just a glimpse of the training he has undergone and the methods he used during his explorations. More detailed information about him can be found here.

Malli Mastan Babu:

Sadly he became famous only after his death. He is the first Indian and first South Asian to climb all seven summits, first Indian to climb Vinson Massi, Carstensz Pyramid. He holds a 2006 world record of climbing each continent’s highest peaks in 172 days. He was the only climber from Andhra Pradesh to summit Mt. Everest. He did a 75-day High altitude trek from Mt. Everest to Kanchenjunga, covering approximately 110kms and a 2000kms travel in 132 days of the trans-Himalayan expedition from Mt. Everest to Mt. Kailash. His entire travels are recorded here and here.

Dilip Donde:

He is the first Indian to circumnavigate (sagar parikrama) the world solo on a sailboat. He sailed for 276 days and documented his entire journey in his blog. He has sailed through strong winds of 55 knots (101 Km/Hr) and waves of height up to 9 meters (29 feet). On this epic journey, he has stopped at 4 places only. His journey completed in May 2010 after sailing for 9 months. This voyage was a part of Indian Navy’s project sagar parikrama.

Abhilash Tomy:

He is the first Indian, second Asian and 79th person to complete a solo unassisted non-stop circumnavigation under sail. This voyage was also a part of Indian Navy’s project sagar parikrama, initiated by Vice-Admiral M.P.Awati. During this journey of 151 days he has sailed through winds of 70 knots (129 Km/Hr ) and waves of height up to 10 meters (32 feet). He has not sighted human for 130 days during this journey. His journey completed in April 2013. It’s mentioned in several papers and articles that he blogged his entire journey, but I couldn’t find it. Please share in comments sections below if you know it.

Bharadwaj Dayala:

He is first Indian to complete a solo tour around the world on an Indian-made Karizma motorcycle. He has travelled across 5 continents in 18 months covering 47,000kms and completed his journey in October 2007. His has blogged his travel details here.

If I have missed any other great explorers/travelers it's only due to my lack of knowledge.

5 things you can learn from a 5 year old kid.

There is a famous saying “There are no one happy in this world except the small kids and saints.”, if you have spent time with kids below 5 years of age you would understand how true it is. As long as they are awake they will be active and keep running around the house, they would be doing something or other but they never sit idle. I often wonder how they are active all the time. These small kids who can’t pronounce most of the words even clearly, they are yet to see the world and are able to spend their entire time so happily. From the time I spent with my son, below are the key takeaways. Every child is different but below are the common qualities for the majority of the kids I observed.

Play it:

For a 3-year-old kid, everything is a game it may be eating food, singing a song, watching a rhyme, riding a bicycle, fighting with parents, talking to someone or anything else. They just play everything as a game and as good as they can. Whatever they are doing they do with excitement and involvement. If they are not interested, no matter what you do they won’t even attempt to do it. Give a set of LEGO blocks to a kid who loves running and jumping around, he won’t even consider it as a toy, take the same kid to a park he will surely enjoy there restlessly to the full extent. It is evident that most of the schools are now following the same method of teaching kids through games. Same way whatever we are doing in life if we can do with same excitement and involvement as if we are playing a final match in a tournament we will first enjoy doing it and we will start giving our best effort in doing it. Treat life as a game and play it the best you can and results will follow.

“Necessity may be the mother of invention, but play is certainly the father.” - Roger Von Oech

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw

Results:

Kids when doing the things they like they don’t think and worry about the result. When they like to jump from the bed they just do it, when they want to play a game they just play. Yes, there are both good and bad results by doing so but that’s how they learn. If a kid evaluates the entire scenario what will happen if he jumps from a bed like how he jump, where he will fall, where he will get hit, what damage to himself & surroundings it will cause, he will never jump at all and if he never jumps you already know he will never learn. When you play cricket with a small kid who doesn’t even know how to hold bat correctly he just tries to hit every ball as hard as he can and even if he misses most of them he doesn’t worry why he missed, he immediately grabs the ball and asks you to bowl again and he tries to hit again. This is how they learn, the same applies to most of us instead of worrying about the outcome of the work or result of the exam, first we need to try as best as we can and put in all the effort we should. Once we give our best effort the results will follow. Instead of enjoying only the result we should learn to enjoy the process of doing a task firstly.

“Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” -Greg Anderson

"It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end." ― Ursula K. Le Guin

Apology:

Kids are new to this world they don’t know what is correct and wrong, they keep doing things as it comes to their mind. When a kid was explained what he has done was wrong and why he should not repeat the same, they apologise without hesitating. Once they apologise they immediately leaves that topic and goes back to what they were doing. How amazing our lives will be if we don’t hold on to our ego’s, hatred, jealousy and simply apologise when necessary and forget the past. If you keep worrying about yesterday when will you enjoy today? It is good to apologise and learn from our mistakes than to hold on to our ego. Taking everything to ego will ultimately hurt us first before hurting  others.

"The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naive forgive and forget; the wise forgive but do not forget." - Thomas Szasz

Apologising doesn’t mean you are wrong. It means you value the relationship more than your ego.”

Love:

The purest form of love is a kids love when they love someone they just show it. They never forget to hug their parents once they wake up in the morning, no matter what/where they are, the first thing they need is to hug mom. They will be much happy when their parents hug them back than playing with any toy. They will be dull only when parents are dull and they try everything to make them normal. They cry/ request/ shout until parents take them into their hands. All they need is the mother should be smiling and hug them when needed.

Our lives are so un predictable we never know whether we will get another chance to do the things which we wanted to do. If you love your parents/partner/children/friends just let them know, express with them who knows what happens the next moment. If you can call up your parent now, then just do it. If you want to hug your partner just do it never wait for the right moment to express love the moment you think of your loved one’s it is already the right moment. If you are near them, hug them if you are far, call and speak with them, if you can’t call them mail them or message them.

“Love is a fruit in season at all times and within reach of every hand.” ― Mother Teresa

Ask:

On average kids ask 500 questions per day which includes from basic necessities to everything else, whatever they need they simply ask. They don't hesitate or get scared to ask no matter what. Why the fan is to roof only, why bike has only 2 wheels, why to pray to god, why to share food with others and so on. When they are hungry they simply ask or when they want something they just ask. This I feel a true gift of children where they don’t hold on to past grudges/ ego’s/ shyness and won’t limit themselves in asking and learning things.

Our life depends on the quality of questions we ask ourselves daily. If we hesitate to ask we will always be at same place and at same situation or even worse. Questioning is the first step of new inventions. Long back wright brothers questioned themselves why people can’t fly like birds and they invented flights, people questioned themselves how to travel faster than walking/running and invented all modern transport vehicles, people questioned themselves how to communicate faster and invented letters, telegrams, mobiles and so on. Same way as long as we don’t question ourselves why something is happening in our life, firstly we won’t understand why we are in that situation and secondly we will never get better. It applies to everything in our life.

If you are not happy with your job ask yourself why you are not happy? What is it you don’t like about it? what to do to get your interest back? Should you change your job itself? Surely you will find answers. If you are not asking about your own problems why anyone else would care about you? If you are not happy with your relationship ask yourself what is not happy in your relation? Why is it not happy? How to make it a happy relation? Then discuss with your partner.

The basic difference between humans and monkeys is questioning itself. If the first human would have never questioned himself what he was doing, why he was doing, is there a better way to do what he was doing? then we would all still be in caves and forests with monkeys…

“Millions have seen apple fall, but newton was the one who asked why” – Bernard M Baruch

“If you don’t ask you don’t get.” – Mahatma Gandhi

ListIt: Things to do when you feel lonely

Walk:

The best medicine when you feel lonely or in anger or in frustration is to go for a long walk. Walking will divert your thoughts and it is healthy too. While walking you can calm down yourself, think and evaluate the situation, analyze it and you may find solution to the problem itself. People who walk regularly are smarter than the ones who don’t walk regularly. In fact you need to have a daily walk of 20 mins which will give you much relaxation.
An early morning walk is the best one, the fresh air in the morning and the sunrise will energize you.

Music:

Music has the power of healing. Always have a collection of songs with you like dance or devotional or meditation or inspirational songs. It is psychologically proven fact that music has the capability of changing our moods. Again it all depends on the type of music you are listening to. Hearing music will take us through different emotional states. If you are confused to select which types of songs to listen just go to YouTube and search for meditation/relaxation music there are number of tracks available which you can play for hours.

Book:

A book is a good friend you must have. Books will never leave you alone, every book you read, will have something to learn or experience. The more books you read the more knowledge you will gain. It should be daily routine to read at least few pages in a book. I always keep a book with me in my home and at my office, whenever I get free time I will start reading. Next time when you feel lonely read any of these books and I am sure it will help you.

Travel:

Travelling is another great thing. It is said “A person who never travels, never learns anything new”. When you travel you will get to know about new places, you can meet new people, you can learn about new cultures and customs. Travel alone, try to explore the places on your own, watch the sunrise in beaches, spend time early morning in hill stations, go for trekking and there are many more options. The world is big and all you need is willingness to explore it. Make a list of places you want visit and keep exploring them.

Service:

The ultimate satisfaction of any person will be while helping needy people. At this moment there are many people who are about to die in next couple of minutes, people who are counting days of their life due to incurable illnesses, who are starving due to lack of food, water. If you can bring hope in one person’s life by your actions it is worth you have lived your life. Go feed the poor, help the needy, spend time with old people in Old-Age homes, teach to poor kids, show love to animals. It won’t be too much to say majority of the people die not due to lack of money but due to lack of people to share with. You don’t need to spend money always to help someone, talk with them friendly, listen to their problems, console them or just spend time with them happily.

Hobby:

Have a hobby be it photography, playing music, playing a sport, collection of items, designing something new, write, cook, sing, dance or anything else. Hobby is the best way to divert the idle brain into something useful and productive.

Let me know useful things to do during lonely time.

5 simple things you can do to reduce environment pollution.

Below are list of simple things you can do about environment pollution. These small steps if everyone takes responsibility in following, the results will be inspiring.

Carry bags:

One of the main thing we should do is reduce (if possible avoid) usage of Carry Bags. Carry bags can cause harm if they are burnt or even if thrown in an empty land. It take hundreds of years to decompose a thrown bag and they release harmful gases when burnt which are dangerous to the environment and to both humans & animals.

As a first step you can reduce the usage of these carry bags. Always carry a cotton or jute bags with you when ever going out for shopping. Even if you are going for purchasing smaller amounts of items carry with you instead of taking new bags every time. The best plan would be to always have a cotton or jute bag in your vehicle itself or have a list of things to check whenever you go out and add these bags to that list.

Reuse the bags already taken. Many times when we do cloth or grocery shopping’s in malls we get carry bags, we can make a habit of storing those bags in one place and taking the same bags back for next time purchase. Instead of taking new bags every time we can use already existing ones.

The best and much needed step is to completely avoid using the carry bags.

LED bulbs

If you check the website http://www.delp.in/  you can notice how many LED bulbs are being distributed by Indian government every second. You can also find the area near you where you can collect these LED bulbs. LED bulbs are far batter for household usage compared to other type of bulbs. A single LED bulb has potential to work for 2-3 years and it consumes 90% less electricity compared to what normal CFL or incandescent bulbs. E.g.: if normal bulbs consume 60 watts LED would be consuming around 6-8watts.

The decision to use LED bulbs will help household in two ways, one the energy consumption comes down and second the life of these bulbs is much more compared to normal bulbs. Ex: An LED bulb used for 8 hours a day has expected life of 10 years or more. Even you can purchase online LED bulbs and there are several articles online which helps in choosing good LED bulb or how to handle LED bulbs.

5 Star Rating

This one you need to remember while purchasing any new electronic items. Any electronic items like fans, TV’s fridge’s or any thing purchase the one’s having 5-start rating. Now a days most of the good brands are providing 5-star rated items, these items consume less power and also will have long life compared to other less star rated items.

Remember “A unit saved is equivalent to 2 units generated.”

Yes it is true. If each of us take basic responsibility and reduce the wastage of power by switching off the fans, lights, TV’s, mobile charging, computer monitors and other power supplied items in our home/office timely that will save a lot of power. We just need to be bit careful about the way we are using the things. Every unit of energy you save is equivalent to 2 units generated.

Electricity Consumption:

You can get a rough estimate of your electricity consumption through below link

India only.

Others:

Plant trees.

Make it a habit of planting a tree for every festival, special occasion and during a happy moment. Every birthday you can make a habit of planting a new tree. There are several websites which accept donations and plant trees. Trees are not useful they are mandatory they help in reducing CO2 levels, they help in preventing soil erosion, help reducing air pollution, helps in maintaining rainfall and many other advantages.

The best time plant a tree was 20 years go and the second best time is now. – Chinese Proverb.

Educate others

The most important thing is to educate others. There are many people around us with highly qualified educations but what they lack is a basic thing called ‘information’. Let me put it this way, most people around us doesn’t know the amount of wastage their daily habits causing and the damage they are causing to the environment. We just have to make them understand that they don’t need to convert their entire home into a eco-friendly one or they don’t need to stop using all electronic items & vehicles, but by being bit careful and taking simple steps in preventing the wastage in our daily habits we can make a HUGE DIFFERENCE. This will in turn help us to have a better future and even help the coming generations. Each of us should start taking responsibility.

It is always better to prevent than to cure.

Thanks VV!!

6 things they should have taught in my school.

Goal

The basic purpose of life is having a GOAL and trying to achieve it. While working for any goal, you should be able to enjoy the journey in achieving it as much as reaching the goal itself. Having a goal in life is like, while you are in a moving train knowing  which station you need to get down and which station you need to cross.

“A good archer is not known by his arrows but by his aim.” – Thomas Fuller.

“If you don’t work a goal, you will be working for a person who has goal” – Unknown

Taking risk

You need to take risks in life if you are afraid of taking risks you go nowhere in life. Everyone will be scared while riding the bicycle for the first time but if you won’t dare to pedal it, it will never move and you will never learn to ride bicycle, same applies for life. Everyone is afraid of something or the other, but how they progress in life depends on how they are taking risks and overcoming those fears.

“It always seems impossible until it is done” – Nelson Mandela

“The biggest risk in life is not taking any risk” --Unknown

Failures

Anyone who hasn’t been thought how to deal with failure will have a hard future. Always we should remind ourselves every coin will definitely have 2 sides and if it doesn’t it’s not of any worth. Same applies to our lives, everyone will have both success and failures in their lives, all that take them forward is how they are learning from both scenarios. We should not think of anything as a failure or success, but every time it should be a learning experience. If you think your life is full of hurdles and only failures is what you have so far then read about people like Nick Vujicic, Arunima Sinha, Abraham Lincoln, Abdul Kalam, Jim Carrey, Oprah Winfrey, Narendra Modi.

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”  – Nelson Mandela

CHANGE

It has to be understood that everything will change. Neither the good times are permanent nor the bad times, it acts like a cycle of both things. As the time goes the way we think/act changes. You should always expect a change in life and mainly be prepared how to face it. Prepare for the worst always and give your best shot every time.

The sentence ‘Nothing is permanent in this world” is so true.

Decisions

In short, life is nothing but the choices you make. Every day knowingly or unknowingly you keep taking decisions this happens in everyone’s life and everyone will have to take decisions daily. Take every decision wisely, as many of the decisions will change your life forever. Few decisions you take cannot be rolled back easily. Every decision you take will have a price, some would cost you your time and some would cost your money and some would cost your future and some will cost life itself.

“Every decision you take will have a price, make sure you choose wisely.”

“Every time you take a decision, you can decide either you give up or try one more time”

Money

We should understand that learning how to manage money is as important as earning money itself. In fact, you will surely fail financially if you won’t learn the art of managing money.

“Don’t work for money; make it work for you” – Robert Kiyosaki
